Biography:

Dr. S.M. Shafiul Alam is a Power and Energy Systems Researcher in Idaho National Labortory’s Power & Energy Systems organization. His research involves coordinated integration of batteries, supercapacitors and flywheels to provide ancillary service enhancement to run-of-river hydropower plants, non-powered dams and water distribution networks used in irrigation and municipal services. He is also collaborating with the IEEE Microgrid Taskforce in identifying the communication and cyber aspects to be considered in microgrid design. He earned his doctorate in electrical engineering at Kansas State University and his master’s and bachelor’s in electrical and electronic engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. Before joining INL, Dr. Shafiul was a postdoctoral researcher in the Power System Engineering Center at National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
