Chemical Engineer

Research Areas:

Biography:

R. Scott Herbst, Ph.D., is a chemical engineer in the Aqueous Separations and Radiochemistry Department at Idaho National Laboratory. In this capacity, he works on projects in Advanced Fuel Cycle Research and Development, including aqueous separation processes to recover fissile material to return to the fuel cycle.

Dr. Herbst has been with INL more than 20 years and has extensive experience in solvent extraction chemistry and engineering related to nuclear fuel cycles. His current emphasis is on engineering aspects of solvent extraction processes, specifically flowsheet development and equipment design and operation in the nuclear fuel cycle. Furthermore, he has spent a large amount of time over the past decade studying the fundamental chemistry associated with solvent extraction processes used in the nuclear fuel cycle; covering both actinide and fission product separations. He holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Montana State University. Outside of work, he enjoys outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, and hiking.
