David Swank

Research Engineer

Research Areas:
Materials Characterization; Materials Properties and Performance

Biography:

W. David Swank is a longtime researcher at Idaho National Laboratory.  Early in his career at the INL he was actively involved in research related to understanding thermal and plasma spray coating processes.  He developed and used advanced diagnostics techniques to understand process variables for such applications as turbine engine thermal barrier coatings, automotive oxygen sensors and plasma sprayed energetic materials.  Since 2008 he has been responsible for configuration and management of several key laboratory capabilities in support of INL’s nuclear mission.  These projects include the Environmental Effects Laboratory (EEL). Work in this laboratory has developed methods for hydriding zirconium for studying the effect of hydrides and their orientation on the mechanical properties of nuclear fuel cladding.  Mr. Swank was also responsible for setting up and managing the Carbon Characterization Laboratory (CCL) in support of nuclear grade graphite research for high temperature gas reactors.  Other significant capabilities developed and managed by Mr. Swank include a reactor insertion experiment assembly glove box with controlled atmosphere and automated welding and centrifugal/pressure casting for development of metal fuels and alloys.  He has been awarded 6 patents and is author or co-author of 22 peer reviewed journal articles and 56 conference proceedings.
