Karin Ahmed, Ph.D.

Postoctoral Research Associate

Research Areas:

Biography:

Dr. Karim Ahmed is a postdoctoral research associate who has extensively studied the effect of radiation on irradiated materials. As a research assistant at Purdue University in Indiana, he was part of a team that preformed the first 3D simulations of grain growth in porous ceramics and helped present a systemic approach to construct phase field (diffuse-interface) models of microstructure evolution in irradiated materials. This work was supported by the Center for Materials Science of Nuclear Fuel, an Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Office of Sciences and Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

As a teaching assistant at Purdue’s School of Nuclear Engineering, Dr. Ahmed helped students develop an understanding of the mechanisms of radiation damage and the microstructural evolution process that lead to drastic changes on the physical properties of materials.

Since arriving at INL in February of 2015 as a research intern, he has worked in the Fuel Modeling and Simulation Department and is currently investigating irradiation effects on the performance of nuclear fuels and structural materials using the mesoscale simulator MARMOT.

Dr. Ahmed is a member of the Materials Research Society (MRS) and Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).
