Ghanashyam "Hari" Neupane, Ph.D.

Staff Researcher

Research Areas:
Geological and Water Engineering

Biography:

Dr. Hari Neupane is a geoscientist in the Department of Environmental and Geological Engineering. He has over 10 years of experience on working in geosciences related research projects. For his Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Alabama, he researched on mobility of heavy metals and arsenic in near-surface environment and developed chemical treatment methods for fixing contaminants in soil and fly ash. After finishing his doctoral degree, he joined the University of Idaho as a post-doctoral researcher and worked on projects aimed at developing and testing new geothermal exploration tools (e.g., RTEst). The RTEst is INL’s geothermometry tool which helps determine geothermal reservoir temperatures using various chemical components in fluid samples collected from hot springs and fumaroles. He has used this tool to investigate several geothermal resources in southern Idaho. His current work ranges from characterization of hidden geothermal systems to measuring the minute levels of rare earth elements (REEs) in geothermal and oil-and-gas produced brines for potential recovery. He uses geochemical sampling and analysis, high-temperature water-rock interaction experiments, earth modeling applications, and geochemical modeling for investigating geothermal resources.
